What affects the quote in custom metal fabrication?
The quotes for two similar-looking pieces can be very different. Knowing the main factors that affect the price helps you plan the budget from the start.
Material and thickness
The type of material (stainless steel, brass, painted steel), its grade and wall thickness determine most of the cost. As thickness increases, both material and labor increase.
Size and complexity
Larger pieces use more material. Bends, weld points, rounded corners and special joint details increase labor time.
Surface finish
Brushing, polishing, matte treatment or paint require extra labor and time. A mirror-polished surface usually takes more labor than a brushed one.
Quantity
When several of the same piece are made, the setup cost is spread across the units. That is why it helps to state the total quantity right at the start.
Lead time
Planning may change for jobs that need urgent delivery. If possible, share the delivery date early.
