The difference between 304 and 316 stainless steel: which should you choose?

One of the questions we hear most often at the quoting stage is whether it should be 304 or 316. Both are stainless steel; the difference shows up in the environment they have to withstand.

304: the common choice for indoors

It is the most widely used grade in kitchens, bathrooms, café counters, furniture and decorative pieces. It performs very well in damp indoor conditions with frequent cleaning.

316: places affected by salt and chlorine

Thanks to the molybdenum it contains, it is more resistant to chlorides and salt. It is considered for seaside venues, pool surroundings and areas where chemical cleaning products are used heavily. It costs more than 304.

Which one should you choose?

If the piece will be used indoors in normal conditions, 304 is usually enough. If there is an outdoor setting, sea exposure or a pool, it is worth asking about 316. If you are not sure, tell us where it will be used and we will decide together.
