How to polish stainless steel and remove scratches
Stainless steel can dull or scratch over time. Most light marks can be removed at home, but the method depends on the surface type.
First identify the surface type
On a brushed surface you see fine parallel lines. A polished (mirror) surface is reflective. The method differs for each.
Light scratch on a brushed surface
Clean and dry the surface first. Then lightly rub a very fine, non-damaging abrasive pad in the direction of the grain. Rubbing against the grain leaves new marks. Then wipe and dry.
Polishing a mirror surface
Wipe with a soft cloth and stainless steel cleaner using straight, not circular, motions. Deep scratches need professional polishing. On a mirror surface, home methods often leave new marks.
Avoid
- Steel wool and coarse sandpaper
- Products containing chlorine and bleach
- Scrubbing a single spot with strong pressure
If there is a deep scratch
For deep scratches and widespread dulling, refinishing the surface is the right approach. We can also discuss bringing the piece to the workshop to renew its surface.
