Does a magnet stick to stainless steel? What does the magnet test show?

The saying "if a magnet sticks, it isn't real stainless" is very common, but not entirely true. The magnet test alone doesn't show quality.

Magnetism by grade

Austenitic grades such as 304 and 316 are normally non-magnetic or only very weakly magnetic. Ferritic grades such as 430 attract a magnet strongly, yet are still real stainless steel.

304 can hold a magnet slightly too

After cold-forming operations such as bending and deep drawing, 304 and 316 can become slightly magnetic in the bent areas. So a weak pull at folds and corners does not in itself mean poor quality.

That's why the test isn't enough

A magnet "not sticking" doesn't guarantee it is 304, and "sticking" doesn't prove it is fake. For certain information, a material certificate or analysis report is needed.

When buying

Ask which grade the product is made of (304, 316, 430, etc.) and ask for it to be stated in writing. For custom fabrication orders, the healthiest approach is to confirm the grade in the quote.
