How to clean and polish brass: when does patina become a problem?

Brass darkens or turns reddish over time. This is the natural result of contact with air, and it is easily removed if you wish.

Patina or dirt?

Brass forms a surface (patina) that darkens with exposure to air. If you like an antique look, you can leave it as it is. If you want a shiny look, it needs to be cleaned.

Cleaning at home

  • Apply a mixture of lemon juice and salt with a cloth and rub lightly
  • Or prepare a paste of a spoonful of baking soda and lemon juice
  • Rinse with plenty of lukewarm water and dry immediately

Brass cleaning products are also available on the market for this job.

Warning for lacquered brass

Some brass products have a protective lacquer. If there is lacquer, acidic methods and scrubbing can damage it. Test first in an unseen spot, or just wipe with a damp cloth.

Keeping the shine

Applying a thin protective wax or polish after cleaning slows tarnishing. Wiping pieces that come into contact with heat, or with ash and oil (such as incense holders), after use protects the surface.
